Citizens to Support MI Women and Children, a coalition which includes the Michigan Catholic Conference, offers the following information.
A committee called Reproductive Freedom for All (RFFA) is working to amend the Michigan Constitution. RFFA has been circulating petitions since the beginning of March in hopes of gathering 425,059 signatures which will need to be counted, validated and then approved before they are officially qualified for the November ballot.
This poorly worded amendment would repeal dozens of state laws, including laws unrelated to abortion.
The following state laws, among others, are at risk:
Þ Parental consent for abortion
Þ Laws requiring parental consent for medical treatment related to pregnancy, including sterilizations and hormone therapy
Þ Screening for women being coerced to have abortion
Þ Requirement that only doctors perform abortion
Þ Ban on tax-funded abortions
Þ Bans on statutory rape and incest
Þ Ban on human cloning
